Nation creation contest!

Thu May 15, 2008, 5:52 PM
THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL JULY 18TH, 2008!

I am currently trying to write a Fantasy (yes, Fantasy, my dear watchers!) story, and I need some help.

This is where you come in.

I need help creating the nations that are on this world! Note that I do NOT need or want them all to be superpowers! There are a few guidelines you have to follow to fit in the world, however.

A) NO NON-HUMANS! This world is strictly human, but there is a way for humans to change shape through magical artifacts known as "Soul Shards". These grant the consumer (literally; you have to eat the shard to get its power) the ability to shift from their human form to their "Soul Form", which is an inner reflection of their soul. Very few people have these, but they may be influential to the development and history of your nation.

B) DETAILS! "The Kingdom of the North" and "its cold" is not enough! The minimum entry is:
Name, Current Ruling system/ ruler(s), Brief History. (If they have been in a recent war, just say it was with another country. I'll fill in the blanks!)
Historical figures, legends and major cities are also advised!

C) DEADLINE July 18th is the last day for entries!

As for prizes, there isn't much I can offer, sorry!

1ST PRIZE - Your nation will be in the story and play an important role. A lot of action will happen regarding your land! Many influential events and people may happen in or come from your nation.

2ND PRIZE - Your nation will be in the story and play an important role. Events will happen in regards to your nation.

EVERY OTHER PRIZE - Your nation will make an appearance in my story in some form!

ALL PRIZES - Recognition in every chapter that is released!

Thank you all, and if you are interested message me in regards. My journal will likely have updates on this project regularly.

As for what the world is like overall:

Technology is Middle Ages level, so muscle powered weaponry (swords, shields and such) are the primary means of war. The most advanced weapon invented is the cannon, which is extremely inaccurate and heavy. Its still a cannon though, and is fearsome indeed! Like the middle ages, advancement was slow!

Magic is VERY rare and physically exhausting. More shamanistic in nature than traditional magic, magic comes from bargains with spirits and generally requires several components and rituals. However, it is very powerful, and an apprentice battle magician could kill over 200 men before he passed out from exhaustion.

Everything Else Is up to you! Tradition, values, etc!

Sounds cool, but... I'm not very good at coming up with these things on my own. I will think about it a lot, and if I come up with anything, I'll let you know.

I do want to ask: what sort of a time period is your story set in? Do you have any idea as to what it's about at this point? Anything you can tell me (and everyone else) about the world will be helpful.

There's one big thing I need to know in order to continue working on this:

Mostly, I need to know more about what a soul shard does. Can it be reused? What is a soul form like? What does a soul shard look like, its properties -- anything will be useful.

Sure thing.

Soul shards are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and shine a radiant purple in any kind of light. It appears to be like a clear purple jewel. As for use, they are literally consumed! To use a soul shard, one must actually eat it! The soul form resulting is as varied as human souls are.

For example, one person who ate a shard became a massive, hideous, demonic beast that could ravage armies, whereas another who consumes a shard became an angelic creature, bordering on being a demigod in might! It all depends on the strength and character of the soul of the consumer.

I hope this helps!

I assume, then, that each shard is one-use in that case.

That was extremely helpful, by the way. I have most of the details figures out, I just need to figure out places, type it all up, and I'm also going to sketch a map.
