Coleridge, Shakespeare, and Late NightsFirst, for the people who want to know about the writing, I am now in a fiction writing class that has me writing a weekly story. However, these stories are not allowed to be Science Fiction (my love and joy) but rather must be literary fiction. This means that a lot of my stories posted for the next... well, quite a while... will be in the modernist literary style. Since these are not going to be my strongest plots, I would love some feedback on things such as dialogue, description, etc.
Also, for my fellow writers, check out this website: [link] It is not the greatest thing I've ever seen, but some of the random generators are a good way to find some small inspiration and get you going. I feel like I've finally broken some of my block and and able to write free now.
Now, on to science and how it will affect some of my stories. I learned a lot about Astronomy this last week. Did you know that the chance of a planet's atmosphere receiving the right amount of visible light to sustain complex life without lethal doses of radiation is 1 in a trillion? Now, if that wasn't boggling enough, the position of the Earth in the solar system being in its exact proper location in its orbit is another 1 in a trillion. In addition to that, our solar system's location in the galaxy being in the exact right location is another 1 in a trillion. So, not even counting the right sized moon or catastrophic events, the chance of the Earth turning out the way it did is 1 in a trillion in a trillion in a trillion. That is a very, very small number. This figure greatly surpasses the number of planets in our galaxy, and as such, Earthborn will have to be greatly revised.
How this revision is going to work actually works better in my mind. Earth is the only actual planet, whereas other solar systems have space stations built (either in orbit around the sun or built upon asteroids) in orbits that allow human life to exist fairly easily. This increases the prosperity of the Earthborn people quite a bit, and changes the locations they visit as well.
Now that all that is out of the way, I'd like to give you guys some other news of a personal nature. Honestly, you don't all have to read this bit (not that you had to read any of it) but it is a relief to write this stuff down. There are two events that have shaped my writing a bit recently. One is that the girl that I was in a half relationship with (we were not official, but we went on several dates and for a while it seemed like it was a sure thing) and I have called it off. This is actually a good thing, as I feel very free and my writer's block left shortly afterwards oddly enough.
The other bit of news is not as happy. My great aunt, who has been very close to me my whole life, has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. I am greatly distressed by this, although miraculously she is free from pain. She could pass on at any moment however, so I am a bit on edge right now. I'll give you guys updates on this as I get them.
